What is sublimation printing and how does it work?

Sublimation is a printing technique that uses heat to transfer special ink (sublimation ink) onto polyester-coated materials or polyester garments. It is very popular for customizing T-shirts, mugs, cases, pillows, keychains, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The design is created in programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or CorelDRAW, and printed in mirror mode so it appears in the correct orientation when transferred. It is essential to use sublimation inks and a compatible printer, such as Epson models with piezoelectric printheads.

It is printed on special sublimation paper, designed to hold the ink without fully absorbing it. It is important to let the print dry completely before proceeding with the heat transfer.

The printed paper is placed on the garment or compatible surface (polyester or special coating).
A heat press is used, configured with:
Temperature: 180–200 °C
Time: 30–60 seconds
Pressure: Medium

The ink goes from solid to gas without becoming liquid. In its gaseous state, it penetrates the polyester fibers or the coating of the object.
When it cools, the ink becomes permanently fixed without leaving a surface layer, ensuring greater durability.
